June 7th. 2010 Oud beeld, opnieuw gewogen - Kunsthuis Syb
Lotje van Lieshout and Marieke Coppens invited students and former students of the Sandberg Institute at Kunsthuis Syb in Friesland (NL) to participate in a
fictive artist colony. For one month, every week a new group of artists gave shape to this colony. During the last week I added a sculpture to the exhibition:
"Oud beeld, opnieuw gewogen" / "aged sculpture, reweighted"
Participants are: Richtje Reinsma, Pavel van Houten, Mannie Krak, Dorien de Wit , Sachi Miyachi, Jetske Verhoeven, Salomé Lamas, Battal Kurt, Tom Milnes,
Gemma Pauwels, Aukje Dekker, Wouter Venema, Marrit Snel, Su Tomesen, Nadine Hottenrott and Wouter Klein Velderman.

Ivory and pride, De Fabriek, Eindhoven
Voor de jubileumtentoonstelling in de Fabriek maakte Wouter Klein Velderman ‘Ivory and pride’. Een reactie op een werk van Ralph Brodrück, dat in 1992
in de Fabriek werd gepresenteerd. Brodrück parkeerde een hijskraan in de achtertuin van de Fabriek en liet de lange arm door het raam de expositieruimte
penetreren.
In het werk van Klein Velderman spelen ‘voorwerp’ en ‘belang’ een grote rol. Klein Veldermans monumentale beelden zijn gebaseerd op bestaande
voorwerpen die hun oorsprong vinden in de industrie. Hier bestaan voorwerpen alleen omdat iemand er belang bij heeft, uit noodzaak. De aard van dit
belang bepaalt de vorm van het voorwerp.
In de sexindustrie is het gebruikelijk om in de titel van een video of foto een omschrijving te geven van de inhoud. In zo’n omschrijving wordt huidskleur
dan vaak aangegeven met ivory of ebony. Bijvoorbeeld “Asian and ebony babe pampering cocks” of “Ivory lesbian working dildo into ebony cunt”.
Met ‘Ivory and pride’ wil Klein Velderman een verband leggen tussen de zware industrie (staal-, mijn-, machine- en chemieindustrie) en de sexindustrie.
Met het H-profiel, als icoon van moderne architectuur, werden vanaf begin 20e eeuw bankgebouwen, wolkenkrabbers en vinexwijken “ingebracht” in
landschappen, steden en dorpen en “verwend” met moderne architectuur.

Escalator, trailer wagon, lorry, flower kiosk, shipping container and a stock of goods – All businesslike objects, that concern the everyday
world of economics.Uniform, functional objects that serve their aim in the world of transport, storage, trade or finance.These objects are the
way they are out of pure functionality, because there’s no other way. The kind of objects that I choose for my sculptures and installations are
those that exist out of a persons importance to the well functioning of the object. Because of this personal importance, the object gains a
certain value. In the first place this is an economical value. But together with this economical value, also emotional value comes into existance.
When an object has to generate income, this makes the owner in a certain way dependent on the object.
-The object rules over his owner-
My interest lies in the area of a person being dependent on an object in such a way that this person is being driven to fysically transform the
object to obey its needs. In my work this is always an ambiguous element. For one thing there is the dependency of the artist on the work of art.
This goes along with the intense and complex craftly proces of creating the work that’s nearly adjacent to complete liability. On the other hand,
the work is full of metaphorical dependency and transformation. This results both in extraordinary large and in extraordinary small themes, from
the political situation in North-Korea to the dependency that one can encounter at using an escalator.

In my work I use ‘object’ and ‘dependency’ as a startingpoint. Within the work of art I revalue the necessity of severe internal sculptural elements.
From there I start shifting, creating and influencing the necessities towards a new reality. These necessities I also call references, because they
strongly point into certain directions, mostly outside of the artpiece. This doesn’t mean that one can find anything close to an answer when following
the references. The references are mostly inconsistent and only serve the composition of the work of art.

MATERIAL CONSEQUENCES is behalve de titel van een tentoonstelling in de Grote Zalen van PICTURA, ook het visuele gevolg van de ontmoeting van twee, op het
eerste gezicht zeer verschillende kunstenaars; Wietse Eeken (Nijmegen 1975) en Wouter Klein Velderman (Deventer, 1979). Kenmerkend voor beide kunstenaars
is dat het echte beeldhouwers zijn in de moderne en klassieke zin. Hun werk is in eerste instantie direct herkenbaar en heeft een enorme dynamiek en
aantrekkingskracht. De beelden zijn manifest aanwezig in de ruimte maar dichterbij gekomen ontstaat verwarring en lichte weerzin, ze zijn 'onecht' en van
onaantrekkelijke materialen gemaakt die de illusie onderuithalen en je als toeschouwer confronteren met een naakte werkelijkheid. Het is als beelden in het
theater waarin je, te dichtbij gekomen door de uiterlijke schijn heen kijkt. Dat maakt hun beelden confronterend. HERMAN LAMERS
